Kindness Starts With You – At School

This is a wonderful book about kindness! It is never too early to teach children to be kind to each other. This book follows Maddy through her day at school as she takes turns and is kind to all. I love the kindness challenge at the end of the book!

The Night Before Preschool

I love this fun rhyming book about the night before school. The first day of school can make children nervous or scared. This book talks about a child’s fears, followed by their excitement to go back and see their school friends. It’s a great introduction to school and getting over the nervousness of the first day.

Llama Llama Misses Mama

School can be fun when Mama Llama is there with you in the beginning! When it’s time for her to go, Llama Llama worries that she won’t back. Luckily, the other children show Llama Llama just how fun school can be!

Time for School, Mouse

This is a cute back to school book about Mouse getting ready for his first day. He gets all of his supplies together and is excited to go! This is a fun and quick board book read.

The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School

Pout-Pout Fish is scared of his first day of school. He is nervous that he isn’t smart enough to go. He does repeat that a few times in the book. I think many children have the same fears, so I was okay explaining it and talking through those feelings. At the end of the book, the teacher explains to Pout-Pout fish that he is smart and he can do it. It’s a great message at the end. We have to work through our fears and be the best ‘fish’ we can be.

Curious George’s First Day of School

I love the Curious George books! They are always so colorful and fun to read. In this one, Curious George gets to be the special helper at school. It wouldn’t be Curious George if he didn’t get into some mischief along the way!

Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun: Having the Courage To Be Who You Are

This is a great story about bullying and how to handle bullies. Lucy is being bullied by a child at school because she is different. She continues to be herself and treat the bully as she would want to be treated. This is a great book for reading on the first day of school and throughout. All children will encounter bullies at some point. It’s good to expose them to books and have discussions about how to handle bullies.

Daniel Goes to School

Daniel Tiger starts school and he is very excited to go! He gets a scared when he finds out that his dad can’t stay with him. Daniel Tiger learns that all parents drop their children off at school and pick them up afterwards. There is lots of learning and fun playing with friends!

The Berenstain Bears Go To School

I absolutely love all of the Berenstain Bears’ books. I have been reading them since I was a child and I’m always excited to read them to children. In this back to school book, Sister Bear starts kindergarten. This is a great story to help children learn about starting school.

Froggy Goes to School

I think I’ve read all of the Froggy books. They are a bit hit with children! In this book, Froggy’s mom thinks that all children are nervous about the first day of school. Froggy say’s “not me!”. This shows children how exciting and fun the first day of school can be.

Maisy Goes to Preschool

This is a fantastic book that walks through Maisy’s preschool day. It doesn’t talk about being scared or nervous. It just focuses on positivity and her preschool routine. A great read!

On the First Day of Kindergarten

Such a fun book to ease children into starting preschool and kindergarten. It’s written like ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’, but for back to school. It walks children through what it’s like in school. From story time to eating lunch with friends, it’s a fantastic read!

Hands Are Not for Hitting

I love this book! It’s a great message that hands are not for hitting. Hands are for love and other positive things. I love the diversity this book shows.

Little Critter: First Day of School

Little Critter books are always cute. This one is a lift-the-flap book all about Critter’s first day of school.
