Preschool Winter Science Activities

The cold winter months may be keeping us inside, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a ton of fun! We have been having a great time learning with these preschool winter science activities. They are simple, creative, and get kids super excited. I love how quick these winter science experiments are to set up. AND how quick they are to clean up.

Preschool Winter Science Activities

I love doing seasonal themes and studies. It’s a great way for kids to explore the world around them. It sparks fun conversation and ideas. There are so many fun things you can do for every season.

Right now, we’re taking advantage of the snow. We’re mixing art with science. Science makes everything so much more engaging. These preschool winter science activities help children to explore, test, think, and discover! It’s so much fun to see their curiosity and excitement.

These activities below use real snow. If you live in a place where it hasn’t snowed yet or maybe it never snows, you can try to get snow cone ice.

Color Mixing Science

These are great activities for working on color mixing. Children will learn primary colors by mixing red & yellow, yellow & blue, and red & blue.

Here is a Color Mixing Activity PDF for you to use with this activity.

Teacher Tips:

This color mixing science experiment is a great way to get children to think, observe, and predict. The way the color mixes on the paper activity (shown above), looks different than the paint mixing in snow. The colors mix the same, but it’s really cool to see the colors blending together in the snow.

Here are some things to ask your students. Anchor charts are great for tracking their answers.

  • What color do you think mixing red and yellow makes? What about yellow and red? Red and blue?
  • What happens if we mix white into the colors?
  • What color do you think mixing all of these paints together makes?
  • Can you think of anything that is the same color as what we just made?
  • What is your favorite color?
  • Let’s count how many people have that same favorite color?

Snow ‘Spray Painting’

We had so much fun with this activity. It allowed us to work on science while mixing colors. Using spray bottles let us work on our fine motor skills.

  • Put a little washable paint into the water bottle. Then, dilute it with water. Shake the bottle until it’s all mixed.

Play:

  • Squirt the paint onto the snow.
  • Mix the primary colors from your worksheet to see the new color they make.

Snow Free Play

It’s always fun to just have some free play with snow. Either before or after this activity, we dig in and play. I like the kids to bundle up with mittens, so they don’t get too cold. We bust out toy shovels and buckets and have a ball.
